Textbooks Now Available for Rent at CTC's Bookstores
Students at Georgia’s largest technical college will soon have another option when it comes to procuring needed textbooks for the next quarter. Through a program with Nebraska Book Company, Chattahoochee Technical College bookstores will begin offering a textbook rental program that will save students up to 50 percent on some titles.

Prospective students have a little bit longer to get documents together for fall quarter at Chattahoochee Technical College. The deadline for the submission of fall quarter application packets (application, application fee, official test scores and sealed high school/GED and college transcripts) has been extended to Friday, Sept. 3.

Chattahoochee Technical College Interiors Program is Going Places
According to Chattahoochee Technical College Interiors program instructor Ginger Burton, keeping up with changes is a large part of the industry. Change is just what the approximately 40 students in the CTC program are preparing to go through. The program, which has been based out of the college’s Appalachian Campus in Jasper since Oct. 2006 will be relocated to the Mountain View Campus in Cobb County at the beginning of Fall Quarter.

Kia Donates 2011 Sorento to Chattahoochee Technical College
Chattahoochee Technical College Provost Ron Newcomb received a Kia “key to the future” during a special event held last week at the Kia Georgia Training Center in West Point, Ga., when Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia Inc. (KMMG) donated 20 of the all-new Kia Sorentos to the Technical College System of Georgia. The colleges receiving the cars were chosen based on the size of enrollment in their automotive programs. Chattahoochee Technical College currently has about 300 students enrolled in automotive programs.

TCSG Sets Enrollment Record with Highest-Ever One-Year increase – Chattahoochee Technical College Continues the Trend of Growth
Chattahoochee Technical College has now seen double digit enrollment in its first four quarters since merging three colleges together last summer to become Georgia’s largest technical college. The college, which saw another large increase in enrollment during summer quarter currently has around 9,000 students enrolled in summer classes compared to about 7,000 students last year.

When the welding and joining technology graduates from Chattahoochee Technical College collected their diplomas June 17, there was one that certainly stood out from the rest. Courtney Garner was the first woman to receive a diploma in the program that has been a mainstay of the Appalachian campus since 1967.

Technical Colleges’ Spring Enrollment Climbs
Spring quarter enrollment in Georgia’s 28 technical colleges is up by 19% over the same time last year.
Initial numbers posted by the technical colleges indicate that the current spring enrollment of 107,269 students is 17,381 more than in the previous spring quarter of 2009, when 89,888 students attended classes on the TCSG campuses.

Beneficial Bugs: The Writer Spider
The writer spider (Argiope aurantia) goes by several names: garden spider, writing spider, black and yellow garden spider, among others. Whatever you call them, they are both creepy and pretty at the same time. This spider can be quite large and is usually found hanging in the center of her web, upside down, with legs together in pairs so it appears that there are only four. The spider that you see in the center of the web is the female, the male is much smaller and he often hangs out near, or even in, her web once he finds her.

CTC Student Wins Statewide Design Contest
Chattahoochee Technical College student Nicole Birk’s artwork will be featured in this year’s Winners’ Book and other publications for the 2010 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) and Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction. Marietta, GA. – Chattahoochee Technical College, in partnership with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, will be offering the Aircraft Structures Training Program (ASTP.) The ASTP is an entry-level, hands-on, skills-based aircraft assembler training program. Reverse Raffle Event was a Huge Success, Raising over $20,000 for the Foundation
The Foundation of North Metro Technical College held its eighth-annual Reverse Raffle on March 16, 2010 at 6 p.m. in Building 400 of the college's North Metro Campus in Acworth. The foundation is a separate and independent nonprofit (501c3) organization established to support the students and programs of Chattahoochee Technical College.
The event was a huge success with approximately 200 in attendance including faculty and staff, members from the community, as well as Chattahoochee Tech board and foundation trustee members. According to Dana Herron, Executive Director of Advancement/Resource Development, “All 300 raffle tickets were sold which helped raise approximately $21,900.” Herron also added “The monies raised from this event will greatly benefit the students and programs of the North Metro Campus located in Acworth.”
Many nice door prizes were given out during the event and the final two numbers drawn belonged to Mark Haney of Marietta, a College Board member and Vice President with WellStar, and Itrellis Ross of Dallas who works with Cobb EMC. The two decided to split the grand prize of $5,000 and the $500 second prize. Mr. Haney plans to give half his winnings to the WellStar Foundation and half back to the college’s foundation.

Grab your leather gloves, some band-aids, and a tube of Neosporin. You’re going to make it out alive, but chances are: you’re going to be scratched up pretty good. Pruning roses can be a time consuming, challenging, and potentially painful process. The way you prune your roses will vary depending on that type of roses you have. If you’ve got your garden-variety shrub rose, like the wonderful Knock Out, they’re not going to be the least bit picky about how they’re pruned. You could run them over with your truck and come spring they’ll come right back. (This is not recommended.) Other varieties, such as Hybrid Tea roses, will be picky. These instructions will suit hybrid teas, Knockouts and most other roses just fine.

Chattahoochee Tech Helps to Train Army Reserve Personnel
Marietta, GA - It’s the first time in history the United States Army Reserve has utilized educational training resources outside the Corp. Chattahoochee Technical College has been contracted by the U.S. Army to instruct students in computer networking technologies. The fifteen-week, 14 course program is comprised of instruction in three technical certificate programs; COMP TIA/ A+ Certification, CISCO Network Specialist, and Microsoft Network Service Technician. In addition, students will receive training in network security technology.

Technical Colleges’ Winter Enrollment Jumps 26%
Atlanta, GA - Enrollment in the Technical College System of Georgia continues to grow at a record pace with 109,548 students currently attending winter quarter classes.
Today’s total is a 26% jump over last year and an increase of more than 22,000 students on the campuses of the state’s 28 technical colleges. It’s the system’s largest winter attendance ever and the second consecutive quarter with six-digit enrollment, following the all-time record of 110,940 students that was set last fall.

The Chattahoochee Technical College Foundation Receives Donation of Vehicles From COBB EMC
Marietta, Ga - Cobb EMC recently donated a 1997 Ford Crowne Victoria and a 1996 GMC Sierra Pickup to the Chattahoochee Technical College Foundation. Sam Kelly, Vice President of COBB EMC Public Relations and Glynda Thor, Director of Corporate and Marketing Communications of COBB EMC, presented the vehicle keys and titles to Rex Bishop, Dean of Technical Studies for Chattahoochee Technical College, Melinda Ashcraft, President of The Chattahoochee Technical College Foundation, and Diane Geis, Automotive instructor, during a short presentation at the Marietta Campus. The vehicles will help provide plenty of hands-on training opportunities for Chattahoochee Tech’s automotive students. Diane Geis commented, “The Chattahoochee Technical College Automotive Program is deeply grateful to COBB EMC for the vehicle donations. CTC Radiography Lab to be named for WellStar
Acworth, Ga - The Radiography Lab at the new Health Education Center at Chattahoochee Technical College, North Metro Campus will be named for WellStar. The announcement was made last night at the Ribbon Cutting of the new building. WellStar and Chattahoochee Technical College have collaborated on the Radiography Program for many years and WellStar made a significant donation to the Foundation of North Metro Technical College to help support the Radiography Program.

Bartow Employer Committee Honored for Community Service
Acworth, Ga - The State Department of Labor awarded the Bartow HR/Employer Committee as the Runner Up for the Community Service Award of the Year. The award was presented to Employer Committee chairperson Rachael Day at the annual Georgia DOL Employer Committee and Safety, Health and Environmental Conference held in Savannah in October. The Bartow Employer Committee received this award for the successful Resource Fair held in Cartersville in 2008.

Kamilla McNac to attend EAGLE Leadership Institute
Acworth, GA - Kamilla Sherrice McNac of Acworth has been chosen to represent Chattahoochee Technical College at the EAGLE Leadership Institute February 10-12, 2010. She will attend the event in Atlanta along with her instructor, Becky Wilke, and Adult Education Executive Director, Jon Collins. The Leadership Institute, sponsored by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) through its Office of Adult Education (OAE), recognizes and honors those students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education classes and programs.

Chattahoochee Tech Students Learn the Art of Ice Sculpting
Marietta, GA - Students in the Culinary Arts Program at Chattahoochee Technical College received valuable hands-on training in the art of ice sculpting as part of their curriculum for the course Garde Manger, the Classical Art of the Cold Kitchen. “We feel fortunate to be able to give our students the hands-on experience of working to create ice sculptures which is a dying segment of our industry,” said Chef Michael Bologna, CTC Culinary Arts Instructor. “Chef Jim Duggan of Ice Sculpture, Inc. is a former instructor at Chattahoochee Tech and continues to support the program by donating his time to help the students learn this skill.”

Many face considerable odds against achieving personal success, including a greater chance of being incarcerated. Officer Connie Douglas Chattahoochee Technical College’s Public Safety Employee of the Year for 2009 Was Recognized by Cobb Chamber at the Public Safety Recognition Awards Breakfast
Austell, Ga. - Officer Connie Douglas, Lead Security Officer at the South Cobb Campus of Chattahoochee Technical College was honored at ceremonies during Public Safety Appreciation Week. Officer Douglas has 20 years of experience in public safety, with six of those years at the South Cobb Campus of CTC. As Lead Safety and Security Officer there, Officer Douglas always maintains a gracious and professional manner while communicating with staff and students every day, especially in stressful situations. She has the skills to handle any situation regardless of the danger.

Newly-merged Chattahoochee Technical College experiences record high fall enrollment.
Marietta, Ga. - Enrollment numbers for the first fall quarter of the newly-merged Chattahoochee Technical College lived up to expectations. The college reported a 25 percent overall enrollment increase over fall quarter 2008 with 11,515 students enrolled on the first day of classes, September 30. Each campus also experienced an increase in enrollment as well as the college’s online courses which increased by almost 72 percent.
